If you enjoyed playing with Stellarium, the open-source planetarium software we shared with you earlier this year, but felt strangely tied to an earth-bound perspective, you’ll definitely want to fly through space with Celestia. Celestia picks up where Stellarium leaves off. With Celestia you can zoom through the known universe, flying through star clusters and swooping in to examine far off galaxies. On its own Celestia is a really fun tool to play with but on top of the expansive star map included in Celestia there is a bustling community of astronomy hobbyists creating hundreds of add-ons for the application. You can get add-ons for everything, from detailed maps of galaxies to extremely detailed surface maps of planets which allow you to zoom down onto the surface and get a closer look. You can even find fictional star maps and objects. In other words, if you’ve ever wanted to fly through the space of the Star Wars universe, this is your chance. Check out the available add-ons at…

- it would be easy to do a quick one from our planetarium software if that helps!
i want to know what renderer was used to make this video?
depending on how much you want to spend and what you want to see, the best amateur telescopes are probably 12 inch dobsonians (a dobsonian is a large newtonian reflector). Orion Skyquest xt10 is an example of a dobsonian. Schmidt cassegrain telescopes, which are more portable, are also very good. I use an 8 inch Celestron C8 telescope and it is very versatile. However, if you don't want to spend too much, try to find the telescope with the most light collection, which is usually the one with the biggest mirror or lens that you can afford, depending on the telescopes type (reflectors use mirrors, refractors use lenses). Reflecting telescopes are usually the preffered type in amateur astronomy.

Well, should it be internet, or binocular, or telescope… They are all for different purposes to me; it's like to be or not to be; it's like to get a telescope or not, to check the stars or not, check that sign the scorpio up above at the end of this month, or not. Or, am I going to watch the birds, meaning to get binoculars or not. Then again, I don't know really, I may be wrong, there are those who use one particular tool to carry out varied tasks, to do 2 or 3 things, perhaps I should learn more.
